Health care workers are looking for jobs at a dizzying array of places, but a new report suggests one of the best places to find the right job might be medical beauty.
“The biggest challenge we have is finding doctors who are not just good at their job, but good at being able to communicate with patients,” says Lisa DeSantis, executive director of the American Society of Plastic Surgeons (ASPS).
“If they’re willing to be open about what they do, people will be more likely to trust them and be able to get the best deal.”
There are also plenty of opportunities in cosmetic surgery, but it’s not just the industry where beauty is booming.
The number of people seeking cosmetic surgery in the US has more than doubled since 2000, according to the National Center for Health Statistics (NCHS).
And while the US is now the world’s leading country in cosmetic surgeries, it’s still only a fraction of the number of jobs available in the field.
According to the American Academy of Dermatology (AAAD), only about 5% of cosmetic surgery jobs are full-time, and the majority are unpaid, with the vast majority of jobs held by students.
There’s also an abundance of options when it comes to cosmetic surgery.
It’s no secret that cosmetic surgery has been an increasingly popular career choice for young professionals, but many are still unsure of how to start their careers.
In fact, the majority of cosmetic surgeons are young, and many are currently under 30.
With a shortage of qualified cosmetic surgeons, there is a need for more qualified professionals.
So what’s the right path for someone looking for a career in cosmetic medicine?
“There’s a huge market for people who have an education in a cosmetic field and are comfortable working in a large organization,” says DeSantes.
However, she cautions that even if a person has an education, it doesn’t guarantee them a job.
Even if a student is able to secure a job, they may not be ready to take on the responsibilities of a full-fledged cosmetic surgeon.
And if they’re not ready, they might not be able take on those responsibilities in the first place.
To make matters worse, many cosmetic surgeons work with a limited number of clients, with some having only one or two patients at a time.
As a result, the makeup of the cosmetic team is often made up of a small number of assistants who are able to focus on one client at a given time.
“That creates a really bad relationship where you’re working with one client and you’re not seeing that much out of them,” DeSants says.
If you’re ready to get a cosmetic job, you need to know what you’re getting into.
For example, it can be helpful to have a degree in health sciences or have experience in the fields of dermatology, ophthalmology, or dermatology related areas.
Then, if you’re interested in working as a dermatologist, DeSante suggests that the next step is to study the types of patients you work with, as well as how the different types of skin care products work.
Another important factor to consider is how long you plan to work in the industry.
Although cosmetic surgery can be done for a relatively short time, it is also possible to be a full time cosmetic surgeon for a longer period of time.
“There are a lot of cosmetic surgeries that are not available to people in their late 20s, 30s, 40s, 50s,” De Santis says.
“I think the fact that they are doing this for so long really limits the opportunities.”
If this sounds like you, De Santes recommends applying to a school for a fulltime, full-year position.
These positions typically offer a salary range between $60,000 to $80,000 per year, depending on the type of job.
DeS Santos says the beauty profession is ripe for young people to jump in.
More and more employers are looking to hire talented candidates who are in the right field, and are looking out for a diverse workforce.
Some of these companies include beauty specialists, barbers, dentists, optometrists, opticians, and more.
At the same time, De Santis cautions against relying solely on cosmetic surgery as the answer to your career.
When it comes time to choose your career path, De Stantis recommends looking at the people around you.
Not only does a school give you the opportunity to develop the knowledge and skills that will help you excel in your career, but the school also provides a great job security.
DeSantis says a good job offer is one that is well received by both you and your current employer.
She adds that she can’t stress enough how important it is to have someone you can talk to and trust
